Obituary

Afton Allsop Gibbs, 98, peacefully passed away February 26, 2015 at her daughter's residence in Salt Lake City, Utah. Afton was blessed to be surrounded by family and friends at the time of her passing. Afton was born September 28, 1916, in Grace, Idaho. Afton was fortunate, being raised in a large loving family. She had four sisters, Mattie, Eva, Dora, Della, and three brothers, Sonny, Ivor, and Don. The importance of a strong family relationship was instilled in Afton at a young age. She graduated from Grace High School in 1934 and continued to live in the Grace Valley. She fell in love and married Jack Gibbs on January 8, 1937. Jack and Afton began life together south of Grace in Niter. There they had a successful cattle ranch and potato farm. Afton took great pride in the success of their small family farm and was a huge support to her husband, Jack. Together they started a family; they had a daughter Sidney, and a son, Marc. Afton had the unfortunate draw of being a widow at a young age. An illness took her best friend and partner from her in 1972; she was just 56 at the time. She continued to be a great example to her family, as she stayed strong and served others constantly. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Afton was known for her cooking ability, homemade wheat bread and cinnamon rolls were just some of her specialties. If a visitor ever left her home hungry, it was their own fault. Afton always made sure visitors were fed and treated just like family. Everyone was welcome into her home, she deeply enjoyed company. Afton was a diehard fan of the Utah Jazz. She supported them through both winning and losing seasons. When healthy, she was able to attend several Jazz games in person. In her later years, she continued to cheer on the Jazz from the comfort of her recliner. She constantly supported her grandchildren. Whether it was attending a local sporting event, or sewing up a pair of Levis for her grandson, she was always there to do what she could. Afton was blessed with two sisters, Della and Dora that lived close by. They too were widows, and the three of them spent all of their free time together. Afton's house became a meeting spot for them and other single ladies in the valley. If someone stopped by while they were all together, they would most likely observe a game of bridge and a heated discussion. During the Holiday months, Afton's basement would be filled with homemade chocolates. Her peanut clusters and cherry chocolates became legendary. Simply put, Afton loved people. There was always room for one more. In her later years, Afton had the amazing support and continuous visits of many nieces and nephews. Afton was preceded in death by her husband Jack Gibbs and her son-in-law, Richard Makoff. She is survived by her daughter Sidney Makoff of Salt Lake City, UT, her son Marc and Bonne Gibbs of Grace, ID, a grandson John and Justine Makoff of Huntington Beach, CA, a granddaughter John and Tori Booth of Scottsdale, AZ, and a grandson Josh and Jenny Gibbs of Grace, ID, and great-grandchildren Dillon and Madison Makoff, Harper, Jack, Ivor, and Grey Gibbs. Services will be held, Saturday, March 7th, 2015 at noon at the Williams Ward chapel in Niter, ID. Family will visit with friends on Saturday morning from 10-11:30 am prior to services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Caribou Memorial Hospital in Afton's name. (300 S 3 W, Soda Springs, ID 83276) Listen to service
