Minnie Arlene Gillette Smith, age 92 died on June 28, 2017, five weeks short of her 93rd birthday, at the Spring Creek Manor Assisted Living Center in Soda Springs, Idaho.
Arlene (the name she preferred) was the fourth child and oldest daughter of Perry Chapell and Minnie Viola Hardy Gillett. She was born on Friday, August 1, 1921 in Ophir, Utah where her father operated the local branch of the Tooele Mercantile Company. The family moved to Tooele as mining operations in Ophir wound down. Arlene grew up in Tooele in a house that no longer exists on North 1st East and graduated from Tooele High School.
Arlene met Roland Burton Smith from Preston, Idaho at a dance. They had courted for several months when Roland was drafted into the United States Army to serve in France and Germany during World War II. Prior to his deployment they married on June 7, 1944 in the Salt Lake Temple where their union was sealed for eternity. Roland passed away on August 3, 2009 shortly after their 65th wedding anniversary.
Arlene was an accomplished pianist and organist. She served in many callings in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She taught piano to several generations of young people in Soda Springs and Georgetown. She was an active, dedicated member of the Church. Arlene served three missions for the LDS Church with her husband Roland, the first in Hawaii from 1984-1986, the second at the London Temple from 1989-1990, and finally at the Manila, Philippines Temple from 1994-1995. They also served in the Logan Temple for many years.
Arlene and Roland have four children, Roland Kay (wife Nina; 9 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild) of North Salt Lake, Utah, Eileen Bell (husband Phil; 7 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren) of Kanab, Utah, Terry Rich (husband Allan; 4 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren) of Preston, Idaho, and Perry LeRoy (wife Christine; 7 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren) of Green River, Wyoming. Four grandchildren preceded Arlene in death.
Arlene was the last survivor of her siblings, Perry Charles Gillette, John Hardy Gillette, Wallace Arthur Gillette, and Marjorie Gillette. She is survived by two brothers-in-law, Ross and Nathan Smith. One brother-in-law Delon Smith and one sister-in-law LaRella Larsen preceded her.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 8, 2017 at the LDS Stake Center, 290 South 3rd West, Soda Springs, Idaho at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive friends and relatives at a viewing on Friday evening, July 7th from 6-7 p.m. at the Sims Funeral Home, 139 East 2nd South, Soda Springs, ID 83276 and before the funeral on Saturday morning from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the LDS Church Stake Center. Interment will follow the funeral at about 2:30pm at the cemetery in Cleveland, Idaho.
