Obituary

Beulah Walton Mendenhall passed away November 6, 2018 at her home in Orem, Utah, surrounded by her family. She was 92.

Beulah was born January 16, 1926 in her Grandmother Pratt's home in Preston, Idaho to Delbert (del) and Athleen Pratt Walton. One week after her birth, her Mother was taken to the hospital for appendicitis. Her Grandmother Pratt cared for her while her Mother was in the hospital.

Beulah was the second child in a family of five children. Her older brother was LaDell, then Beulah, Gale, kay and her sister Dorothy. Her family lived in many different places, due to the lack of work for men during the depression. They lived in Preston, Cleveland, Cedar City, Salt Lake City, Pocatello, Niter and then back to Cleveland.

Beulah loved school. In High School she was active in Drama and was a cheerleader for 2 years.

She met her husband, Claude Mendenhall, in High School. Her brother LaDell and Claude were good athletes and very close friends. They always dated as a foursome.

The second World War had been going on since December 1941, and most young males were being drafted. Claude and Beulah decided after graduation to get married before he would be drafted. They were married on June 23, 1944 in Memory Grove in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Their first son Brian was born June 20, 1945 at Soda Springs, Idaho. Brian was six weeks old when Claude was inducted into the Army Air Force. While Claude was in the service, Beulah served a Stake Mission.

Claude was release from service in September 1946.

Their second child Peggy was born November 13, 1947, then Julie on July 16, 1951, Vernon Kay on October 17, 1954, and Shauna on May 23, 1956.

Beulah was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints all her life. She served in all of the auxiliary organizations of the church and also in the music as choir director and chorister.

Claude and Beulah later divorced. It was in 1977 that Beulah decided to move to Provo, Utah and then to Orem, Utah.

Beulah worked for BYU as a Matron of Deseret Towers. She was nominated and received many awards for the work she performed there. She retired from BYU in 1991. She also served as a Temple worker in the Provo Temple.

One thing most people will remember her for was her beautiful flower gardens. She loved to dig in the dirt. When she reached 90 years of age, her family told her she shouldn't keep planting flowers. She said, When I'm too old to plant, then you better just plant ME!" She was still digging in the dirt 3 weeks before she passed away.

Beulah was preceded in death by her parents, Del and Athleen Pratt Walton, brothers, LaDell, Gale and Kay, and her sister Dorothy.

She is survived by two sons, Brian and Vivien Mendenhall of Grace, Idaho and Vernon and Ann Mendenhall of Spanish Fork, Utah, three daughters, Peggy and Richard Owens of Preston, Idaho, Julie and Kevin L. Bitton of Grace, Idaho, and Shauna Manhart of Provo, Utah. Also surviving are 28 grandchildren, 68 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Services will be held on Saturday, November 17, 2018 at noon at the Thatcher-Williams Ward Chapel in Niter Idaho. Family will visit with friends on Saturday morning at the church from 10:30-11:30 a.m. prior to services. Burial will be in the Lago Cemetery.

In Lieu of flowers the family suggests donation be made to a charity of your choice.
