Clair was born September 29, 1913 in Preston, Idaho and passed away on Saturday, August 18, 2012 at the Caribou Memorial Living Center in Soda Springs. He was the fifth of six children born to Samuel Clarence and Sarah M. Maughn Chadwick. He was raised in Preston and attended Preston schools where he graduated. He was student body president his senior year. While in high school he got a job assembling Christmas toys and subsequently worked for J C Penney's during and after high school. After high school he attended the Southern Branch of the University of Idaho, now know as Idaho State University in Pocatello. He continued working for Penney's at various locations which included Preston, Pocatello, St. Anthony and Pierre, South Dakota. In the late 1930's, he returned to the Mountain West, and while working for the Gephart Stores Company in Ephram, Utah he met his future wife, Evelyn Hansen who was working as the Sanpete County Health Nurse. In 1941 Gephart's sent Clair to Grace, with the instructions to close their store. Instead, Clair bought the store, married Evelyn in Salt Lake City on July 25, 1941 and then moved to Grace where they lived out their lives. He was drafted in the US Army in September, 1943 two weeks shy of his thirtieth birthday. He was assigned to the medical corp. and trained at Fitzsimons General Hospital in Colorado then sent to the South Pacific where he ended up working as the supply clerk attached to the medical unit. At the conclusion of hostilities, he returned to the United States. He was discharged from the service on December 6, 1945 at Fort Douglas, Utah, after which he returned home to Grace. During the 50's, 60's, and 70's, Clair took a job as a traveling salesman for a work glove company covering the states of Idaho, Utah, and Wyoming. In the late 1950s Clair opened a second store in Soda Springs and in rapid succession, a store in Preston, Arco, Ashton, American Falls, St Anthony, and Lava Hot Springs. In the mid 1960's he had his first experience in banking when he obtained an interest in The First National Bank of Grace. In December of 1973, Clair and Frank, along with six others including his brother-in-law, W. H. Shuldberg, organized and opened Security State Bank in Mud Lake, Idaho. Over the next several years, the bank expanded into towns which included, Dubois, Arco, Soda Springs, Grace, Lava and Chubbuck, Idaho. In June of 1978 a bank charter was obtained from the state of Nevada, and Nevada Bank and Trust Company was opened in Caliente, Nevada. This bank ultimately opened branches in Alamo, Ely, Mesquite, Wendover, Elko, and Carlin. In December of 1984, the Chadwick's purchased the failed Golden Spike State Bank of Tremonton, Utah from the FDIC. This bank subsequently opened a branch in Logan. In December of 1985 they gained control of Tri-State Bank in Montpelier, Idaho. In December of 1992, The Chadwick Foundation was chartered. This philanthropic endeavor was organized to provide academic scholarships and lend support to community betterment activities, primarily in Caribou County and Southeast Idaho.
