Obituary

Clarence Dean Simmons was born Jan 18, 1912 in Raymond, Alberta, Canada to John Stoker Simmons and Mary Jane O'Brien Simmons the 7th of eleven children. He was raised on a farm in Burley ID where he learned to love growing crops, raising animals and playing sports. He enjoyed his school days in Burley and at Albion State Normal, University of Washington and the University of Utah. He served a mission for the LDS Church in the Northern States. He met his wife, Vivian Elizabeth Burn, while teaching at Henagers Business College in Salt Lake City UT when she came as a student. He was soon offered a job teaching high school in Grace ID where he taught for 43 years, 11 of those years in Soda Springs. He became Superintendent for a few years but much preferred teaching. CD and Vivian were married four months shy of 78 years before Vivian passed away in 2012 at age 96. Together they raised eight children, Marilyn (Maurice) Clegg, Karen Sue (Don) Bird, Bart (Linda, Simmons, Tim (Sue) Simmons, Wendy (Don) Meacham and Scott (Nicole) Simmons. Two children, Kenneth and Jeanne are deceased. CD served in many church callings, his favorite as a Gospel Doctrine teacher and singing in the ward choir. He served as Bannock Stake Clerk for many years, on the High Council and Bishop of the Grace 1st Ward. Clarence was very active in the community having served on the City Board for a period of 33 years, some as Mayor of Grace. He was nominated for State Senator twice. He was active for many years in the Grace Lions Club. He also ran the Grace Theater. In 1946 CD bought Cleveland Sand & Gravel and began a business that lasted 50 years. He also raised potatoes and rogued potatoes in the valley for many years. Clarence passed away May 4, 2017 in Soda Springs ID. He has been a bulwark in the community in many ways and for a very long time. He will be sorely missed. We are blessed to have had him and his expertise for so many years. Services will be held on Wednesday, May 10, 2017 at Noon at the Grace Stake Center.
