Edward Paul Duren, 82, of Soda Springs, Idaho passed away November 15, 2017.
He was born June 28, 1935 in Rising City, Nebraska to Paul and Grace Duren. He grew up on the family farm in Rising City Nebraska.
Ed graduated from Kansas State University in 1957 with a Bachelor of Science in Animal Husbandry. He received his Masters of Science in Animal Science from the University of Idaho. Ed retired, professor emeritus, from the University of Idaho after 39 years of service to the Idaho livestock industry. Duren's leadership activities have involved numerous state, regional and national committees. He received the Distinguished Service Award by the National Association of County Agriculture Agents and the American Society of Animal Science Extension award. Ed was recognized nationally and internationally as an author and lecturer of livestock science and technology. As a cumulation of his many professional accomplishments, Ed was inducted into both the Eastern Idaho Horseman Hall of Fame and the Eastern Idaho Agriculture Hall of Fame.
Ed married Marjean McNeal and raised four children: Laura, Stephen, Licia and Kyle. Ed was very involved in the livestock activities of his children and liked to witness the many lessons that animals taught children. As a personal passion, he loved working with his draft horses. Ed liked to drive his horses and pull horse drawn farm equipment. Through the years, he had several great teams of horses and raised several nice foals.
Another passion of Ed's was education. Ed believed in the power of education. He would frequently ask young people where they planned to attend college, not "if" they planned to attend college. He encouraged young people to get an education in agriculture since despite what happens in the world, the growing population would always need to be fed. The world would depend on great, young minds in agriculture.
Ed is survived by Marjean, his wife of 57 years: children Laura (Jerry) Boldt, Longmont, Colorado children Ryan, Natalie and Craig, Stephen (Denise) Duren, Weiser, Idaho children Grayson and Shae, Licia (Ron) Hillman, Roswell, New Mexico daughter Katie, and Kyle Duren, Eagle, Idaho children Kyla and Jarrett. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Grace Duren and grandson, Michael Hillman.
