Gary Edgar Norman, 69, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at the Portneuf Regional Medical Center in Pocatello, ID on March 6, 2019 due to respiratory failure complicated by multiple myeloma.
Gary was the oldest of two children of Edgar Nat Norman and Mary Eugenia White Norman. Gary was born on June 13, 1949 in Jacksonville, FL and raised in Bellevue, WA. He married Kathleen Leilehua Thomsen of Soda Springs, ID on July 30, 1971 in the Latter-Day Saint temple in Logan, UT.
He is survived by their six children, Lynna (Jorge) Sarmiento of Poteet, TX, Daniel (Tara) Norman of Idaho Falls, ID, Angela (Lance) Birch of Soda Springs, ID, JoAnna (Matthew) Jonak, of Nampa, ID, Elizabeth Hansen of Pocatello, ID, and Sarah Norman of Nampa, ID. They have 15 grandchildren, Aaron Sarmiento, Garrett Norman, Alexander Sarmiento, Joshua Norman, Marie Birch, Kara Sarmiento, Emily Birch, Jacob Norman, Samuel Hansen, Anthony Sarmiento, Hyrum Norman, Natalie Norman, Lilyana Hansen, Isabella Jonak, Michael Gelinsky.
He is preceded in death by his parents, and a daughter, Kara Norman.
Gary graduated from Sammamish High School in Bellvue, WA in 1967. He then entered the US Navy in June of 1967 and served in active duty for four years. He transferred to the US Navy Reserves in 1976 and retired in 1994 as a YN1 (Yoeman First Class).
Gary and Kathleen Norman met in Norfolk, VA while Gary was active duty. They married and spent a few years in Rexburg, ID, while pursuing an education at Ricks College. They settled in Soda Springs, ID in 1974 where Gary was employed by JR Simplot and retired after 40 years in 2014.
In his retirement, Gary enjoyed golfing and traveling with his wife, Kathleen. They were called to serve in the Logan and Star Valley Latter-Day Saint temples, which was a highlight of his life. He served various church callings including Sunday school teacher, a counselor in elders quorum presidency, and most recently as executive secretary in the Soda Springs 3rd ward bishopric.
There will be a viewing on Friday, March 15th from 6-8 pm at Sims Funeral Home, 139 E 2nd S. Soda Springs, ID. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 am, Saturday, March 16th at the Latter-Day Saint Hooper Chapel, 281 E Hooper Ave. Soda Springs, ID, with a viewing from 9:30 to 10:30 am in the Relief Society Room. Burial will be at the Fairview Cemetery.
