Obituary

Gordon Albert Aland, 82, a devoted husband, supportive father of 4, loving brother of 7, one-of-a kind grandfather to 20 and a great-grandfather to 9 and loving friend to many, passed away peacefully on the morning of December 6, 2014 with his loving wife by his side in South Jordan, UT. Gordon was born to May and Smith Aland on April 27, 1932 in Montpelier, Idaho and was the oldest of 10 children. He was educated in Montpelier where he participated in Boxing, Seminary, Student Court and Football. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1951 and served on the USS Bennington, as well as the USS Tarawa and USS Franklin. After being honorably discharged in 1954 he attended Idaho State University where he studied Geology. During this time he met and married his bride Mary Josephine Humpherys on June 15, 1956 in the Logan, Utah LDS Temple. Gordon Studied at various mining colleges and graduated from BYU in 1959 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology. The couple lived in South Dakota, Provo, Utah, Grand Junction, Colorado and Salt Lake City, Utah over the next sixteen years. During this time the couple welcomed 2 daughters, Leslie and Kathy and a son , Michael. The family then moved to Soda Springs followed by a short departure to Casper, WY before returning to Soda Springs in 1970 where the couple welcomed a third daughter, Dawn and have made Soda Springs their home for the Last forty-four years. Throughout his career Gordon worked at Hercules in Salt Lake City, Utah, Central Farms in Montpelier, Idaho, Gas Hills Uranium Mine in Casper, Wyoming and then accepted a position with Monsanto, where he worked as a Geologist, Mining Technical Supervisor, Mining Superintendant and retired as Government Affairs Specialist over the last twenty-seven years. Gordon served 6 years on the District 150 School Board and eleven years on the Idaho State Geologist Board. He was on the Idaho Department of Lands, State Mining Advisory Committee and Upper Snake River Basin Area Group. He was an active member of the LDS Church where he held many positions: Elders Quorum President, Bishopric Counselor, High Priest Group Leader and served as an officiator in the Logan Temple for 4 Years. His most recent and cherished calling was serving as Branch President of the Soda Springs Jail for the last 7 years. Gordon enjoyed spending time with his family, traveling, being outdoors, ATVing, Photography, cooking and he and Mary Jo Logged many miles traveling to watch their children and grandchildren in their various school activities and sporting events. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years Mary Jo, 4 children; Leslie (Michael) Lunt, Kathy (Terry ) Anderson, Michael Gordon Aland and Dawn (James) Hallock and 19 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and 6 siblings: Lois (Byron) Eborn, Richard (Lyndell) Aland, Barbara (Brent) Neeley, Robert (Karen ) Aland, Susan Aland, John (Marsha) Aland. He was preceded in death by his parents, Smith and May Aland, 2 brothers, Shane and Shawn Aland, 1 sister, Shirley Aland Wurst and 1 granddaughter, Meghan JoDel Lunt. A viewing for Gordon will be held Thursday, December 11, 2014 from 6-8 p.m. a the Sims Funeral Home in Soda Springs. A celebration of his life will be held on Friday, December 12, 2014 at Noon a the Soda Springs LDS Stake Center (290 South 3rd West). A short viewing will be held from 10:30-11:30 a.m. at the Stake Center prior to services. In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made at any US Bank in the name of Mary Jo Aland/Dawn Aland - Hallock and will be gifted to the IMC Cancer Research program. Listen to service
