Heber Grant Lau, 86, of Soda Springs, passed away at his home on Wednesday evening, August 26, 2015.
Grant was born on January 20, 1929, in Soda Springs to Heber and Rhea Soffe Lau. He was raised in Soda Springs and graduated from Soda Springs High School. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from the University of Idaho. At the U of I, Grant was a member of the Navy ROTC and the Delta Tau Delta Fraternity where he made many lifetime friends.
After college he was commissioned in the Navy, serving during the Korean War. He enjoyed his adventures in the service and his time aboard the USS Gunston Hall, during which he spent time in Japan and Korea.
He married Mary Jane Gurvin on November 18, 1956, in Soda Springs. They had two children, John and Sarah.
Grant learned about ranching as he grew up during the depression, herding sheep, milking cows and making hay, among other chores. He was involved with agriculture his whole life. He farmed land homesteaded by his ancestors at the 5-Mile Meadow as well as land at Corral Creek, China Hat, and Long Valley. He was progressive and innovative in trying new crops and adopting new technology. He also worked at Terteling, a mining company, and owned his own insurance business for a time.
Grant was a lifetime member of the Soda Springs Lions Club, served on the Soda Springs Planning and Zoning Board, School Board, and was a member of the Caribou Historical Society.
His hobbies included photography, fishing, hunting, cross-country and downhill skiing. After Mary Jane died, he discovered that he enjoyed cooking for family and friends. Sometimes he even made enough food for everyone.
Grant never met a stranger. If you had the time, and sometimes even if you didn't, he always had a story! He was a wealth of information about Soda Springs, family and Caribou County history. He was unconcerned about convention, adopting hobbies before they became popular, such as kayaking and cross-country skiing.
He is survived by a son and family, John, Lori Anne, Tom, and Rebecca of Soda Springs; a daughter and family, Sarah, Richard and Grant Prittie of Twin Falls; and one brother, David (Ann) Lau of Salem, Oregon. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Mary Jane, and a younger brother, Thomas.
Friends may call on Thursday, September 3, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Sims Funeral Home in Soda Springs. A graveside service will take place on Friday, September 4, at 11 a.m. at the Fairview Cemetery, followed by a celebration of life luncheon at Soda Springs City Park Pavilion.
