Gwendoline "Gwenn" VanderSteen Lindsay, 90, of Soda Springs, passed away Thursday, November 5, 2015 in Pocatello, Idaho.
She was born on June 6, 1925, the first child of Johanas C. VanderSteen and Eva M. Hansen VanderSteen. She was born and raised in Ogden, Utah. She graduated from Ogden High School in 1943. She participated in the Marching Band while in high school. After graduation she spent some time in beauty school and then in business school. She worked for Pillsbury Mills as a switchboard operator and also did some bookkeeping.
She spent some time in the Montpelier/Bennington area where she had relatives and that is where she met a cowboy named Darrell Raymond Lindsay who she eventually married. They were married in the Logan Temple on December 17, 1947.
She had four children. Darrell Ray, Vera Jane, Joe Van and Shelley Sue. She devoted much time following and supporting them in their school activities. She was proud of all of them. She was also a great example of the value of hard work. She had 14 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. She was always saying that her kids and grandkids were the love of her life.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and had many calling during her life. Some of these were the Primary President, a Sunday School Teacher, a Cub Scout Leader and a visiting teacher. Darrell and Gwenn were called to serve in the Logan Temple for several years. They loved these weekly trips to Logan.
Her hobbies were mostly working in the yard and planting flowers and doing puzzle books. She also loved to read romance novels. She met once a month with the Birthday Club, a group of ladies from the Third Ward who celebrated their birthdays by getting together and going to lunch.
She spent her last five months at Ashley Manor in Pocatello, Idaho where she became great friends with her caregivers there.
She is survived by her son and two daughters, Darrell and Tina Lindsay, Jane and Claude Garbett, Shelley and Kevin Coziah, and daughter-in-law Nancy Lindsay, all of Soda Springs, Idaho and her sister Carol Layton of Huntsville, Utah. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers Jimmy and Ray VanderSteen, husband Darrell Raymond Lindsay, grandson Matthew Reid Lindsay, great-granddaughter Mattie Joe Lindsay, and son Joe Van Lindsay.
Services will be held on Tuesday, November 10, 2015 at Noon at the Soda Springs LDS Stake Center.
Family will visit with friends on Monday 7-8 p.m. at the Sims Funeral Home and on Tuesday 10:30-11:30 a.m. at the Church prior to services. Burial will be at the Fairview Cemetery in Soda Springs.
