Hans Robert Marx born in Heidelberg Germany, December 29, 1927 to Ludwig and Elisabetha Marx. He died November 1, 2012 in Pocatello. His father was an electrician and his mom was a very hard working woman. Unfortunately Hans father died when Hans was only 7 years old and he was their only child. His family was all very musical, but his family asked Hans to just mouth the words because he wasn't much of a singer. Hans really enjoyed the opera, he also loved a good waltz. He made money by being paid 10 cents a dance.
Around the age of 15, Hans was physically recruited into the German Army and was sent to the Russian Front. He was also in several hand to hand combats until he was captured and was sent to a concentration camp, he was there for a year and a half. (or Hans would say, he was a guest of the
Russian Government.) While he was in there, even though it was sad, but also a blessing when someone died, there was a little bit more bread to fight for. He was also shot twice sometime in this excursion. He also dug his own grave. While Hans was digging his own grave a doctor must have seen something special in Hans and saved him from that grave. Hans was 6'2" tall, big boned and only weighed 80 pounds when he was saved by the doctor. This doctor spoke 9 languages fluently, but was never able to master the English language, so he became a barber in Washington D. C. He eventually became Hans sponsor and Hans went on to dental school in Germany. After that, Hans then went to work for the US Army as a dental tech for over 2 years.
Before leaving Germany, Hans was on a date. They were walking down the street when an American started causing problems and tried to take the girl. Hans hit him so hard in the face that the guy died before he hit the ground. He ended up having an American trial and was acquitted of murder.
Before coming to America in the mid 1950's he met and married Karen. She had 2 children, they later divorced.
In the mid 1960's Hans opened up his own dental lab in Orange, California, which he owned and operated for several years. Through those years he helped several other people open their own businesses. Hans also traveled with the flying dentists to other countries to donate their skills to the less fortunate.
Hans was struck by lightning twice in his life. Once was in South America and the other time is when he was trying to help a young man.
Hans moved to Soda Springs with his friend Paul Lloyd and has resided here ever since. Hans enjoyed and did many different things through his life, like playing pool, did karate, liked watching birds and going for walks, which he still did every day up until his passing. But most of all, Hans loved life! Hans saw and went through a lot of tragedy in his life, but he had a big heart and touched so many people in his life. He had friends all over the world, which continued to call and visit him through the years.
Hans had quite the sense of humor, he really enjoyed getting under your skin and when he felt like he accomplished it, he would snicker and laugh to himself. He loved to stir the pot! We will miss watching him and Uncle Leo argue with each other! It always reminded everyone of the movie, "Grumpy Old Men." But everyone knew they cared for each other. Hans, we love you and you will be missed!
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by the love of his life Vicki Gray and many friends and loved ones.
We will have a celebration of Hans life on Saturday, November 10th from 2:00 until 4:00 at Stockman's Bar. Bring your favorite potluck and come share some of your favorite stories of Hans.
