Obituary

Helen "Kathy" Sklenar Peterson Bybee was born September 14, 1930, at home in Abie, Nebraska. She is the fourth of six children to Louis Sklenar and Josephine Sobathka. She grew up on the family farm and she really did have to "walk four miles to school". She finished the eighth grade, as in those days, not many girls went on to high school. She worked as a waitress when she was younger and that attitude of service never left her. She married Millard Russ and had her two children. They later divorced. While working at the Uranium Club during the mining boom in Colorado, she met Dale Peterson. He literally swept her off her feet one night coming to her rescue with an unruly customer. They were married February 22, 1958 in Soda Springs. Dale adopted Patti and Bob. They raised their children in Soda Springs and many happy family memories were made in that small town. Whether it be bottle hunting, mining for gold on Caribou Mountain, camping, fishing, hunting, snow-mobiling, huckleberring or being with their extended family, mm loved it. She worked for dad's uncle Al, who built the Trail Cafe, for many years and made life-long friends. She worked for 13 years at the Caribou County Senior Citizen's and was a wonderful cook. The grandkids loved going to help grandma Kathy there. They especially loved the times when they shucked hundreds of ears of corn for the summer picnic. They built their home next door to Grandma Elsie on Third south and lived there until Dad's death in 1976. She married Garth Palmer Bybee on April 8, 1977. They built a home on Hooper Avenue in 1992. Garth retired in 1981 and they had many adventures, traveling South each winter with many of their friends, flying their Piper Cub airplane on a two week vacation to Alaska, gold mining, hunting and gardening and canning. After Garth passed away in 2003, she moved with her daughter, Patti, to Tooele, Utah where she was able to build another home next to Patti and Randy. Again, she had many adventures in the last few years, traveling with them to Canada, Hawaii, California, Arizona, Nevada, Mississippi, and Wyoming. She was blessed to have made many new friends while in Tooele. She loved serving in her callings in the LDS Church. She was always an invisible and valuable "third" counselor in the Relief Society. She had enjoyed very good health all her life until three years ago when her diagnosis of colon cancer took us all by surprise. She fought a good fight and passed peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, March 11, 2015 in Brigham City, Utah. She will be missed by her daughter, Patricia (Randy) Hoopes of Brigham City, UT, son Robert Peterson of Brady, TX, and grandchildren, Brian (Christie Johansen) Hoopes, Victoria (Joseph) Hale, Star Valley, WY, JoAnna (Andrew) Carter of Brigham City, UT, and Kimberly Hoopes(Grand-daughter-in-law). Jared Peterson, Elko, NV, Chantyl (William) Wolf , Elko, NV, and Savanya Peterson, Sacramento, CA. Great-grandchildren : Gage Long, Zoe Hoopes, Emmalee, Adam, Jenna and Harper Hale, Dillon, Mason, Kaitlyn and Alivia Carter. She has two siblings in Nebraska, Nettie Drain and James (Marcy) Sklenar. Two dear sisters-in-law, Lucky Sklenar and Marcey Sklenar. Also many nieces and nephews and many, many friends. She was lovingly welcomed into heaven by her eternal companion, Dale. Also her parents, sister Annie, brothers Joe and Ernie and many family and friends. Special thank you to the loving care given by CNS Hospice the last few months. Especially, Misty and Jason and Dan and Elle. Services will be held on Tuesday, March 17, 2015 at Noon at the Hooper LDS Chapel in Soda Springs, Idaho. Family will visit with friends on Monday evening from 7-8 p.m. at the Sims Funeral Home and on Tuesday morning from 10:30-11:30 a.m. at the church prior to services. Listen to service
