Obituary

Helen Mason Thomas, of Soda Springs, Idaho passed away peacefully on December 30, 2015. Despite a quick decline in health in recent years, she enjoyed eleven years of enthusiastic service to her family, church and community since the passing of her husband Rollin in 2004. Her final months brought her a much-deserved rest from a lifetime of selfless service. Born November 18, 1929, to Ezra and Helen Mason of Fielding, Utah, she was the fourth of eleven children. She graduated from Bear River High School and attended Utah State University and was one of the first "Aggiettes". She married Rollin Thomas of Malad, Idaho, in 1950 in the Logan Temple. They ultimately settled in Soda Springs in 1953, where they raised three sons: Ross, Reed and Chris. Helen is well-remembered by many as a teacher and for her love of music. She served as a substitute teacher of many years, and she developed many lasting associations with young women whom she taught as the head of the Cardettes Drill Team. She loved teaching piano, singing, and directing the music for the 3rd Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She is preceded in death by her husband, seven brothers and sisters, and one great-granddaughter. She is survived by her three sons, Ross (Kathie), Reed, Chris, two brothers Ron (Linda) Mason, Dent (Kathy) Mason, sister Mae Hansen, and sister-in-Law Cathy Mason. In addition, she will be happily remembered by nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, January 9, 2016 at 11 a.m. at the Soda Springs LDS Stake Center. A viewing will be held Friday, Jan. 8, 6-8 p.m. at the Sims Funeral Home in Soda Springs, ID and on Saturday morning 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the church prior to services. Burial will be in Malad, Idaho Cemetery with graveside services at 3:30 p.m. Services are under direction of the Sims Funeral Home. Her family wishes to thank the many people who filled Helen's life with happiness, peace, friendship and support. Her longtime neighbors-including the Balls, Christensens, Roholts and Parkers-were exceptionally trustworthy and helpful friends, and her friendship with Nedra Torgesen transcended many of life's blessings and challenges. Finally, the family expresses the sincerest gratitude for the skillful care and compassionate concern of Carla, Russel and the staff and residents of the Bear River Mission, Tremonton, Utah.
