James was born in Pocatello, Idaho on November 22, 1937 the son of Fredrick and Gertrude Grady "Horrocks" Pidcock.

He was raised on the family farm south of Ross Park in Pocatello and graduated from Pocatello High School in 1955 where he was active in the FFA.
