James B (Jim) Spencer was the youngest of 8 children born to Elmer and Ilah Chloe (Thomas)Spencer in Turner Idaho on Febuary 3rd. 1943, 21 years after his eldest brother Glen. Jim grew up helping on the family farm until they moved to Grace when he was 12 yrs old. He attended school in Grace where he started chasing a little cutie named Diann Hamp. He chased her until she finally caught him on Sept. 9, 1960. Together they were blessed with 5 chrildren. Jennifer, Jeanette, Douglas, Darin, and Jodi. Jim worked at the cheese factory in Thatcher for a few years. He also did odd jobs in Lewiston Idaho for a short time. He returned and helped build the old steel bridge west of Lava Hot Springs before landing a job as a milk truck driver. In 1966 he starded working for the county as a equipment operator. 7 years later in 1973 he became Caribou County's Road and Bridge Supervisor. He did this job for another 7 years before realizing that indoor work was not his cup of tea.
In 1980 dad started his dream job of operating the big equipment in a phosphate mine near Soda Springs for Dravo (Degestrom). He worked there for 23 years before retiring in 2004. Retirement gave him and Diann (or Ma as he called her) more time to do what they liked most. Camping and 4 wheeling in the great outdoors with the family.
They enjoyed camping up 8 mile canyon with their little ones. Eventually their little ones had little ones of their own and were camping alongside them. In September you could find the same tribe out north at hunting camp. He really enjoyed that time of year when he could hunt elk, watch and listen to all the other wild life during archery season. There were 25 people at camp when dad killed his one and only archery bull which excited and amazed us all because of his struggle with Parkinsons Disease. When not out in the great outdoors you could find dad at his workbench fixing or making something..usually for someone else. (just tinkerin') as he called it.
He will be missed by the neighbors whose lawns and driveways he tinkered with along with his own. He will always be remembered for his helping hands and willingness to listen without judgement. He was an extremely patient and caring man who set an example for us all to follow. He will be missed by all who new and loved him for his gentleness and genuine concern for others. Good bye (Grinnin' Jim or Grinner) as they called him at work. You set the standard!
Jim is survived by his sweet wife Diann, and five children. Jenny (Clay) Hall of Soda Springs, Jeanie Sorensen of Logan Utah, Doug (Michelle) Spencer of Brigham City Utah, Darin Spencer of Soda Springs, and Jodi (Tim) Gaines of Chesterfield Idaho. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, one sister Shriley (Richard) Williams of Blackfoot Idaho and many nieces and nephews.
