Leeland Nyal Johnson passed away peacefully April 11, 2015 in his Layton Utah home with his loving wife Sybil at his side, succumbing to congestive heart failure.
Lee was born February 4, 1943 to Frank William and Gracie Adra Olsen Johnson in Thatcher, Idaho.
In his youth, Lee enjoyed the family farms and gardens. His teen years were filled with fast cars like his 1957 Plymouth Sports Fury and sports, especially basketball and track. He graduated from Grace High School in 1961.
Lee served in the California Mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints from 1962 to 1964.
He married Jeannette Elaine Nelson in July 1965; their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan Utah LDS Temple in June 1992.
Together Lee and Jeannette raised their three children in Soda Springs, Idaho: Jodie (Blake) Rindlisbacher of Eagle, Idaho (children Jake, Katie & Jenna); Nicole (Darren) Farnes of Spanish Fork, Utah (children Madison, Garrett & Macee) and Justin (Lori Thomas) Johnson of Pocatello, Idaho (children Zander, Zackary, Ellie & Adrie).
Lee and Jeannette owned and operated several businesses in Soda Springs, Idaho: Soda Variety and Hardware, Mode O' Day and Fashion Crossroads. Lee had an entrepreneurial spirit, buying and selling many things and trading many vehicles in his lifetime. He retired from Monsanto in 2006.
At age 43, he suffered his first complications of heart disease leading to a heart transplant in 2001. As a heart transplant recipient, he became an advocate for The Intermountain Donor Service in Utah and participated in the US Transplant Olympics in 2002, 2004 and 2006 with Team Utah winning several medals. Lee was an avid golfer and jokingly wished to be buried in his golf cart.
He became a skilled writer and editor of newsletters, ward bulletins, and books regarding his new heart.
Having been on the "Other Side of the Bed", Lee nursed his wife Jeannette through her one year battle with cancer in 2005.
Just as in life, he had a second chance at love and married Sybil Williams Jensen in Brigham City, Utah in April 2006. He was loved and accepted by her six living children and their families.
Lee and Sybil served in the Georgia Atlanta North Mission from 2009 to 2011. Lee also enjoyed his service as an Ogden Utah Temple ordinance worker.
Lee is survived by his in-laws, Gilbert and Eleanor Nelson, three children, 10 grandchildren and one great grandson, his wife Sybil, her six children and 20 grandchildren. Lee is also survived by his siblings Shirley (Doyle) Lloyd, Kayleen (Larry) Higgins, Val (Karen) Johnson and Mary Lester.
