Obituary

Lucy Jane Stocking Hayes, 94; passed away Tuesday, May 19, 2009 at the Caribou Memorial Living Center in Soda Springs. Born in Burley, Idaho on October 2, 1914 Lucy was the fourth of five children of Joseph Horace Stocking and Marta Jane Butterfield Stocking.

Lucy and her brothers and sisters grew up on their Father's and Grandfather's ranch raising sheep, which is now maintained by the Idaho Fish and Game, known as the Stocking Ranch or the Upper Blackfoot River Wild Life Management Area, 25 miles Northeast of Soda Springs. They would return to their farm in the Burley area for the winters, to winter and feed the sheep where they raised the hay and grain. Lucy graduated from Burley High School in1933. Lucy was nearly always with her Father and Brothers living out of sheep camps hauling food supplies and salt for the sheep to the out laying camps, or helping her Mother cook for the Family and hired men. She talked of helping her Brother trapping bears and the always pesky coyotes and was a good shot with the rifle. Although Lucy rode her mule "Old Peggy" she developed a love for horses after marriage as her husband always had some of the best trained, roping and cutting horses in the area.

Lucy met David "Carl" Carlette Hayes, the cowboy from the neighboring Austin Ranch and after courtship were married on September 11 1939 in Pocatello, Idaho and later sealed in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They lived on the Upper Valley Austin Ranch (Bear lake Cattle mans Assoc.) in the summer and went down river to live and feed cattle on the lower ranch, now the Allen Ranch. (big red barn) They also lived and worked on the Strong and Fox Ranches down river until Lucy and Carl moved in to Soda Springs and began putting together a home in 1948, when it was time for their oldest son to start school. Carl began working for Monsanto in 1952 and Ranching became their 2nd job.

Lucy was an active member of the First and Fourth wards in Soda Springs, where she taught primary for at least 40 years. She was active with Daughters of the Utah Pioneers and Senior Citizens Center and would go on short field trips with them. Lucy never had a drivers license or a bank loan and resisted the modern conveniences of the time. Lucy never owned a micro wave oven, and resisted a television until the 60's.

Lucy was the Mother to five children. Two babies died shortly after birth. She and Carl raised the remaining three children to adulthood while living in their home in Soda Springs. She continued to live there after Carl passed away in 1993. She was well watched over by her neighbors and her Sons, Daughter and Grandchildren who made sure she never lacked for anything.

Lucy went to Spring Creek Manor to live in September of 2000 and then on to the Caribou Memorial Living Center in March 2006.

Lucy was preceded in death by her Parents, Joseph Horace and Marta Jane Stocking, her four Brothers and Sisters, Rulon and Reverent (Revie) Stocking, Pearl Merrill and Luella Court, two sons Horace J and Andrew Vance Hayes and her beloved husband David Carl Hayes.

Lucy is survived by two sons and one daughter David Lynn (Karen) Hayes of Brigham City, Utah. Patricia Sue Foitzick, of Lewiston, Utah and Landon Carl (Annie) Hayes of Pocatello/Burley Idaho, 11 Grandchildren, 20 Great Grandchildren and 1 Great-Great Grandchild.

Funeral Services were held Saturday, May 23, 2009. Interment was at the Fairview Cemetery in Soda Springs, Idaho.

The family would like to express their appreciation for all the love and devotion the Staff at the Caribou Living Center has shown to Lucy while she has been in their care, her friends and neighbors, and to Dr Brian Anderson and Dr John Obray and their staff's.
