Obituary

Marjorie Ellen Gates (Moreno) (Keene) Walters

Marjorie passed away on July 8, 2026, in the comfort of her home, surrounded by family. She was born February 12, 1939, in Compton, California, to Thomas Edison Gates and Melba Marie Marcroft. She was a happy, curious, and challenging baby. At 5 months old, she faced her first challenge in life; she contracted Polio. She was put in the hospital, and the rest of the family were put in quarantine at home. Doctors told her parents that she would never walk and that she would not be able to have children. Because of the good care at the hospital and a priesthood blessing given by her father promising her that she would walk and be able to have a family, she was able to overcome these challenges. She has been able to walk and have a family.

She grew up in Compton, California. When she was 5 years old, she lost her best friend; her 3-year-old brother, Richy, was run over by a car. She said it was very hard on the family for a very long time. In 1955, when she was 16 years old, she had a child and put him up for adoption so he would have a better chance at life and hopefully have opportunities she could not provide. She loved music, drama, and dancing. She graduated from high school in 1957. Right after high school, she married Santiago Muro Moreno on March 14, 1957. They had 6 children together, Irene, Stan, Gilbert, Subrina, Mark, and Paul, and 8 years later divorced. After her divorce, she worked for people ironing clothes 12 hours a day to support us kids.

She met Harold Arlo Keene at a church dance and later married him in Las Vegas, Nevada, on June 19, 1966. They had 4 children together, Gray, a stillborn child, Sean, and Melona.

They later divorced. She moved to Hurricane, Utah, and worked as a nurse aide. After working a couple of years, she decided to go to school. She went to Dixie college and got an associate degree and then on to SUSC to get her bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. She taught in the Granite School District until 2001, when she retired.

At retirement, she decided to move to Soda Springs, Idaho, where she substitute taught until the district changed to the 4 day week.

She met Ron Walters May of 2006 and married him on June 22, 2006, in Soda Springs, Idaho. They were later sealed in the Logan temple. Ron passed away December 17, 2021, and she has missed his happy, loving presence ever since.

Despite all her challenges, she always said that her Savior, Jesus Christ, was her best friend and was always there for her.

Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Edison Gates and Melba Marie Marcroft, her husband, Ronald M Walters, and her sons, Gray Keene, Mark Keene, Gilbert Moreno, and a still born son. She is survived by her sisters, Marie Laidlaw and Pat Douthett, and her children, Forrest and (Laura) Eastman, (Greg) and Irene Torgesen, Stan and (Ami) Keene, Subrina Curtis, Paul and (Gina) Keene, Sean Keene, Melona and (Daynen) McCarthy, and the Walters stepchildren and their families. She has 39 grandchildren and many great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 18, 2026, at 12 noon at the Soda Springs LDS Stake Center, 290 S. 3rd W. A viewing will be held prior to the service from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Interment will follow in the Fairview Cemetery.
