Martha Jean Wallace Scheffel, 92, of Boise—formerly of Soda Springs, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 14, 2011, surrounded by family.
She was born in Denver, Colorado, on April 1, 1919, to Robert and Dorothy Wallace. Marty's grandparents, Isaac Zook and Martha Smith Dunwoody, were a significant part of her upbringing; and she stated, "There were no two greater people-- ever." Marty's own grandchildren might argue that point.
Upon completion of high school, Marty attended business college, and then worked in the office of an automotive business. Years later in Soda Springs, she worked in the accounting office of the JC Penney Store. Also, she and Cecil owned and operated the Hooper Launder Center in Soda Springs for many years.
Marty married her high school sweetheart, Cecil "Butch" Scheffel, on June 1, 1941. Setting a fine example, they were happily married for 51 years and raised three children. It was in her role as wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, that she found her deepest joy.
Marty is remembered by friends for her humor, her generous caring nature, and her beautiful blue eyes. She was known to send thoughtful cards, offer transportation to aging friends, lend a hand and offer support in times of need. In addition, family members fondly remember her as being wise, kind and a great cook. She had a knack for making everyone in her family feel like her favorite.
She was active in Presbyterian Women, Caribou Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, bridge clubs, and Job's Daughters. She was a member of the All Saints Episcopal Church in Denver and later, the First Presbyterian Church of Soda Springs, where she served in many capacities and was considered one of the "backbones" of the church.
Marty is survived by her three children Thomas (Gaye) Scheffel of Boise, ID; Randolph (Ann) Scheffel of Castle Rock, CO; and Patricia Scheffel (Randy) Freeman, of Boise, ID. Additional survivors include 8 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and brother.
A graveside service will be held at the Fairview Cemetery in Soda Springs on Sunday, August 7th at noon. A "Celebration of Life" reception will follow at the First Presbyterian Church. Friends and family are welcome to attend.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Soda Springs, 109 South 1st East, Soda Springs, ID 83276.
