Mary Anderson Meiners, 99, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, friend and neighbor passed away December 13, 2015 at the Spring Creek Manor in Soda Springs. She moved from her home to Spring Creek only one week before her death. The last 2 ½ years she was privileged to share her home with Jack and Penni Jensen, her special live in caretakers.
She was born February 29, 1916 in Lund, Idaho to Hans Anderson Jr. and Annie Dabling Anderson. She was 2nd of four children, and older brother, Merlin, a younger brother, Harry, and a sister, Ruth.
Mary lived in Lund, graduating from the 8th grade as the class valedictorian. She then attended and graduated from North Gem High School in Bancroft, Idaho.
After high school, Mary's father wanted her to attend college to become a teacher, because teaching was a respected profession. Even though Mary dreamed of becoming a nurse, she respected her father's wishes and put herself through college and received a teacher's certificate. When she was 53 years old, with a 12 year old daughter and a supportive husband, she was able to fulfill that dream of becoming an LPN. Mary loved being a nurse for 25 years, finally at 78 years old, she retired. Well, she put her stethoscope in her pocket, cookies, bread, or soup in her delivery basket and continued taking care of her friends and neighbors, as she had done for years.
Mary graduated from college in the spring of 1937, did her student teaching and had secured a teaching position in Lund, Idaho. She and J Henry Meiners were married on June 30, 1937 and moved to the Lund farm. However, when the school board realized that Mary was married, they told her of their, "hiring only single teachers" policy. Consequently, Mary never did teach school.
She was active in the LDS church, serving in nearly all the organizations. She and Henry served as ward, stake, and regional dance directors for many years.
Mary was a member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers for 65 years. She spent many hours at the Museum in Chesterfield which has now been restored back to the little church on the hill at the Chesterfield Historic Town site. While it was a museum, she made 21 yards of rag rugs on her loom for some of the floors. For many years she donated a hand quilted quilt for the DUP raffle on the 24th of July Pioneer Day Celebration.
Henry and Mary were sealed in the Logan Temple on June 30th 1949. That was a very happy day for them and three of their children. Later in life one of Mary's favorite experiences, was the 8 winters, she and Henry lived in St. George, Utah attending the temple. They made lifelong friends and spent nearly every day at the temple.
Mary loved being a farmer's wife and could be seen in the early years working side by side with Henry on the Lund and Arimo, Idaho farms.
Mary enjoyed traveling with henry and after his death in April of 1995 she was fortunate to continue her travels with dear friends. She visited Europe, Asia, the Holy Land, Australia, New Zealand, the Caribbean, Hawaii, Alaska, and most of the temples in the western USA.
Mary is survived by 4 children, Jean (Dean) Hunter, Karen (David) Modersitzki, Bill (Claudia) Meiners and Joselyn (Elbert) Harmon, 14 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, 22 great-great-grandchildren and her sister Ruth Robinson. She was preceded in death by her husband Henry, her son John, her parents, and brothers Merlin and Harry.
Mary has been a living example of service. She especially loved serving her family and was most happy being surrounded by them. These last few years she has been blessed by the service of not only her family, but of her friends and neighbors. There are not words to express our gratitude, as a family, to all of you who touched our Mother's life with concern and kindness.
Services will be held on Saturday, December 19, 2015 at the Bancroft LDS Chapel at 11 a.m. Family will visit with friends on Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the Sims Funeral Home in Soda Springs and also on Saturday morning 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the church prior to services. Burial will be in the Lund Cemetery.
