Susie Melva Cook, a longtime resident of Soda Springs, passed away February. 24, 2009 at Highland Manor in Elko, Nevada after a short illness.
She was born in Lava Hot Springs on December 3, 1921 to Luther D. and Caroline M. Potter. She married Norman James Kirby in 1940; he passed away in November of 1953. She married Ray John Cook in February of 1960; he passed away in July of 1992.
Susie grew up in Lava Hot Springs on the family farm. She graduated from Lava High School. After she married, she lived in Grace and Rexberg. After the death of her husband, she moved back to Lava and attended business school in Pocatello. After completing school, she moved to Idaho Falls to work for General Electric at the Atomic Energy site in Arco. She returned to Lava after 2 years. In 1950 she moved to Soda Springs after her marriage to Ray. In December 2007, she moved to Elko, Nevada to be with her son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Maria Kirby.
Susie enjoyed working on the farm with Ray. After their retirement, she and Ray spent many happy hours traveling and enjoying their many friends. They spent most winter in Yuma, AZ, and summers at home with the Good Sam's Club. After Ray passed away, she came to think of the Senior Citizen Center members as a second family. She also had many special friends and neighbors.
Susie is survived by her children Gary and Maria Kirby of Elko, NV; and Glenna And Sam Greenberg of Belton, MO; and stepchildren Joan and Dennis Izaak of Rupert, ID and Jan and Al Paloma of Elko, NV and sever grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, Jim and Ray and sisters Norma and Emma and her brothers Fred and Roy and stepchildren Lynn Ray Cook and Linda Cook Christensen.
Memorial services will be held on Thursday, June 4, 2009 at Noon at the Sims Funeral Home in Soda Springs. Interment will follow at the Lava Hot Springs Cemetery in Lava Hot Springs.
