Obituary

Neva Ila Turner Nielsen, 87, passed away on Saturday, January 21, 2017, of natural causes. She was living at Heritage Home in Preston, ID. Neva was born 6 February 1929, in Harlem, Montana. She was the third child born to Henry Ross Turner and Ila Priscilla Olsen. Two brothers, Henry Jay and Glenn Virgil, welcomed their new baby sister. When Neva was six weeks old, the family moved back to Grace, Idaho. As Neva grew and began attending school, her main transportation was a beautiful black horse. There was a barn behind the school where all horses were tied for the day. It was about 2 ½ miles to school and sometimes they walked. Neva was an avid reader and spent many hours in her favorite spot in the top of an old cottonwood tree with a book. Neva attended Thatcher High School until the consolidation, and then graduated with honors from Grace High School in 1947 with 45 other students. On September 17, 1947, Neva married Charles William Nielsen in the Logan Temple. They set up housekeeping in a little two room house and both of them worked at the beet dump. After the beet harvest, Bill accepted employment with Loyal White and they moved to Cleveland. The young couple moved several times over the next few years because of employment changes. In 1954, Bill went to work at Monsanto and the young family moved to Soda Springs, but Bill's strong desire to farm took them back to Grace in 1961 to follow that dream. After living in several rentals, they built their dream home on the highway in 1966. Through the years, Neva worked mostly as a homemaker and seamstress. In 1961, she was nominated as Homemaker of the Year by the local homemakers club. She also worked as a bookkeeper for a few years at Mel Brown Co. and as a medical assistant to Dr. Herron. Her real love was sewing and quilting. She did custom needlework ranging from Drill Team/Cheer uniforms, wedding dresses and formals, to replacing a broken zipper. Neva headed the Sewing Division for the County Fair for many years, and taught years of 4-H Sewing classes. Neva was always devoted to her LDS religion. She served in many callings in Primary, Young Women, and Relief Society. Her favorite was their calling to work in the Logan Temple, where they served faithfully for 19 ½ years, until failing health caused them to quit. Neva is survived by her spouse, Charles William (Bill) Nielsen, four daughters, Diane (John) Roberts and Christine (Richard) Gilbert, both of Grace, Janet (Jeff) Hill of Riverton, UT, and Brenda Bailey of Salt Lake City. She also leaves 16 grandchildren and 43 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents, her two brothers, two sons-in-law Mark Hulse and Christopher Bailey, and two great-granddaughters Faith Rowe and Megan Hulse. Funeral services are Tuesday, January 24, at noon, at the Grace Stake Center, with visitation on Monday evening 6-8 p.m. at the Stake Center and also Tuesday from 10-11:30 a.m. prior to services with Bishop Kelley Anderson officiating. Burial will be in the Grace Cemetery. Many thanks to the staff and administration at Heritage Home in Preston, Idaho, for their loving care and concern, and to Access Home Health and Hospice for their hours of loving attention.
