Obituary

Norman Allen Bjorkman, fondly known as Chief Norm, passed away June 7, 2017 at the age of 95. Norm was born in Central, Bannock, Idaho on February 5, 1922 to Henry Albert and Karren Sophia Hansen Bjorkman. He had 5 older sisters, 3 older brothers and one younger brother. He was raised as a member of the LDS faith. Norm learned his work ethic on the farm and his culinary skills in the kitchen from his mom. As a youth, Norm excelled in sports having a love of football and basketball. He had a brilliant mathmatical mind. He worked hard at odd jobs to have his own spending money. Norm graduated from Grace High School in 1939. He was unable to attend college for the lack of money. Norm enlisted in the Army/Air Force in October 1942. He was proud to serve his country. He was discharged in February 1946. He served most of his time in the Hawaiian Islands where his duties included administrative specialist. He trained and became expert marksman with carbine and pistols. Norm was most proud that he attained the rank of 1st Sergeant. This was the beginning of his many years in leadership roles. Norm was determined to never marry. But that was short lived when he met the love of his life Gerry Richards on a blind date. They were married on October 15, 1949 in Las Vegas, NV. They settled in Soda Springs where they raised their three daughters whom he loved and adored. Norm was a great example of community service. His many adventures included Kiwanis, Lions Club, Caribou County Fair Board, Soda Spring Golf Club, Idaho State Golf Association, and Soda Springs Fire Department. He loved his job as Chief, loved his firemen, and loved serving his community. He retired after 60 ½ years as a fireman at the age of 92. In his spare time Norm loved to golf, play bridge, garden, cook and spend time at the fire station when he wasn't with his wife and girls. He thought his grandchildren were the best. Norm and Gerry owned and operated Soda Springs Sheet Metal. Besides being a journeyman plumber, he did heating, roofing, and sheet metal work. They retired in 1985 and spent many winters in Lake Havasu, AZ and their summers in their beautiful garden. His girls bragged that it was the best garden in Soda Springs. Norm is survived by his daughters: Diana Jeanne Harestad-Williams (George), Shelly Seamons (Steve), and Pam Petersen (Doyle). He is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren. Norm was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Norm's family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Angie Rodgers, Dr. LaVonne Mills, Tammy Moore, RN and the many care givers at the Gables Assisted Living Center and Heritage Home Health who loved and cared for him right to the end. Services for Norm will be held on Tuesday, June 13 at 11 a.m. at the LDS Chapel on Hooper Avenue in Soda Springs.
