Obituary
Scott J. Smith, 45, of Soda Springs, Idaho, passed away Friday, Feb. 27, 2009, near Alpine, Wyoming after being caught in an avalanche while snowmobiling.
He was born May 21, 1963, in Soda Springs, Idaho, to J.C. and Vera Smith. He attended school in Wayan and Soda Springs, Idaho; and Tremonton, Utah graduating from Bear River High School in 1981. Scott moved between Utah and Idaho following the family's ranching operation. He loved the beauty of the Grays Lake Valley and considered it to be home.
Scott married Stephanie Dockstader in November of 1983, and together they had three sons, Jared, Derek, and Zachary. They were later divorced. Scott and Sue were married on June 27, 1998, and he was a loving husband and father to her children as well as his own.
Scott worked in the ranching and logging industries. He loved to be outdoors and to ride his motorcycles and snowmobile. He was ever generous and a very hard worker that was always willing to serve others without any expectation of thanks. Scott's laugh was heartfelt and contagious. He was a humble, quiet giant. Scott was active in the community and served on the school board for six years. He was also an active LDS member of the Soda Springs Fifth Ward, serving in many callings, most recently as a counselor in the bishopric.
Scott is survived by his wife, Sue Ann Smith, of Soda Springs, Idaho; sons Jared (Cari) Smith, Zachary Smith, Michael Torgesen, and Steven Torgesen of Soda Springs, Idaho; daughters Anna (McKay) Young of Malad, Idaho, and Jennifer Torgesen of Logan, UT; parents J.C. and Vera Smith of Grays Lake, Idaho; sisters Jalene (Earl) Somsen of Grays Lake, Idaho, Marilyn (Rand) Matthews of Layton, Utah, and Jean (Tim) Steele of Brookings, South Dakota; brother Dave (Aneta) Smith of Grays Lake, Idaho; granddaughters Jennavieve and Janey Young of Malad, Idaho and Paeton Smith of Soda Springs, Idaho. Scott was preceded in death by his son, Derek, on October 10, 2004.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, March 4, 2009, at noon at the Bailey Creek LDS Chapel, 361 S 3rd E, Soda Springs, Idaho. Burial was at the Fairview Cemetery in Soda Springs, Idaho.
