IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Stanley B.
Sorensen
August 7, 1932 – August 9, 2022
Proud to be an Idahoan his entire 90 years, Stanley B. Sorensen was born in Bancroft, Idaho, August 7, 1932, and died in Soda Springs, Idaho, August 9, 2022. His parents were Niels Sorensen, a Danish (Esberg) immigrant and Soda dry farmer, and Grace (Pat) Hamp from Grace, Idaho. Stan began growing up on the farm in Ten Mile Pass and developed a forever close bond with his sisters – Gladys, two years older, and Arlene, 13 month younger.
When Stan was 6 years old his mother quickly and unexpectedly died. The children were then with their father when possible, and with a dear friend in Bancroft, then his Uncle Hans and Aunt Dora in Soda and Ten Mile, and for a winter a cousin Delma and Harvey Jones in Idaho's wilderness region northeast of McCall.
Stan graduated from Soda high and earned a B.S. Business Administration degree at the University of Idaho. A leader on campus, he was particularly active in Willis Sweet, the favored men's dorm of the day, leadership.
His ROTC participation led him into the Air Force. He was outstanding in training in Texas, then served at Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska as a Captain.
Stan returned to Soda and married Lila Lee Stone. They had a son and a daughter – Steven Bart, who lived just one day, and Tina Marie. After divorce, he married Karen Hawker; adopted and helped raise her daughter, Kimberly Ladean; and then divorced. In 1985 Stan and Jeannie M. Johnston were married, and he learned how good life with an Italian can be.
Stan was especially smart, hardworking, and good hearted. And he knew how to party. He farmed long hours with his dad on their farm north of Soda and worked as Caribou County's Deputy Treasurer during the off-season. He spent a lot of time and money for his daughters. Stan coached little league boys' basketball, back when coaches helped boys on both teams become better players and better people. A favorite weekend for Stan meant fun times with Jeannie, surrounded by friends at their Dike Lake cabin.
But his passion was vehicles – cars, pick-ups, tractors, all rolling things engine driven, old and new. From high school to assisted living, Stan had a fancy car in the garage and a car magazine by his bed. A car salesman's delight, he traded models often and kept each one spotlessly clean.
His sister, Arlene, and husband, Verland Moore, and most recently their son Valdean and wife, Kena Ann, were Stan's loyal helpers on projects, both creative and mundane, and during his last years for life in general.
Stan is preceded in death by his parents; his two sisters and their husbands – Gladys and Don Hansen and Arlene and Verland Moore; his son, Steven Bart; and his wife Jeannie.
Stan's graveside service, with military rites, will be at Soda Springs Fairview Cemetery on Friday, August 19, 2022 at 11 a.m.
