Obituary

Vera Mae Dubach Smith died peacefully at her home in Wayan, Idaho. Vera was born March 3, 1923 in Wayan, Idaho to David Dubach and Ida Mae DeVault Dubach. Vera grew up in Grays Lake valley, but attended first grade in Soda Springs, then attended school through 10th grade in Wayan. During her 10th grade year, she felt the influence of her new school teacher, Mr. Merrill, who influenced her to pursue a career in education. Her summers were spent playing softball, dancing at the Eagle Creek Dance Hall, riding horses and doing chores around the ranch. While growing up on the ranch, Vera and her brother, Edgar, would drive the tractor, feed the lambs, and haul whey from the cheese factory in Wayan. The family moved to Logan, Utah to finish her high school education, graduating from Logan High School. She then went to Utah State University where she received her degree in Elementary Education. While teaching second grade in Beaver, Utah, she met J.C. Smith. They were married in the Idaho Falls Temple on September 10, 1946. Two years later, Vera and J.C. moved back to Grays Lake to run the ranch. They also worked hard to develop a winter ranch near Snowville, UT, and spent many winters in that community. Vera worked side by side with J.C. clearing brush, building fences and managing cattle. Vera had beautiful handwriting, exceptional spelling and phonetic reading skills. She played a mean game of Upwords with her husband, and had great skill at crossword puzzles. Many picnic lunches were made by Vera as the family would spend the day working in the fields. She loved riding horses, raising flowers, and doing yard work. Raising her family was one of her greatest joys. Vera was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She served in both Primary and Relief Society organizations. In 1987, Vera and J.C. served a mission in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin Mission. Vera is survived by her husband, J.C. Smith, her children, Jalene (Earl) Somsen of Wayan, ID, Marilyn (Rand) Matthews of Layton, UT, Jean (Tim) Steele of Brookings, South Dakota, David (Aneta) Smith of Wayan, ID, 13 Grandchildren, 16 Great-Grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, Edgar Herschel Dubach and Howard D. Dubach, her son Scott J. Smith, her grandsons John Dale Smith, Derek and Jared Smith, her great-grandsons, Garrett Somsen and Tristan Smith. Services will be held on Tuesday, September 25, 2012 at 11 a.m. at the Hooper LDS Chapel in Soda Springs (281 East Hooper Ave.).
