Tuesday, August 2, 2011, at the age of 64 years old; Melvin Wayne Smith passed on peacefully at home while surrounded by his loving family and close friends.
Wayne did not lose his battle to cancer, but was rewarded with a grand family reunion in heaven.
Wayne was born October 10, 1946 in Pocatello, Idaho the son of Myron Wayne and Vetra Smith.
He grew up in Pocatello, attending schools and college there.
After four years of dating, he married his sweetheart, Deborah Davis on August 10, 1968.
Together they were blessed with two beautiful children; Amy Christina and Travis Lloyd. Wayne worked at Bullock Motors and Parks & Sons until moving to Soda Springs, Idaho in 1974. He was employed with Washington Construction, Beker Industries, City of Soda Springs, UPRR and worked for Agrium CPO for 15 years until retiring. Wayne went back to school at ISU to further his knowledge with his automotive interest; graduating with high honors. But out of boredom and wanting to be around people all the time he decided to go back to work and was employed with Mark III in Soda Springs. He worked there until he was diagnosed with cancer in December of 2007.
Wayne enjoyed spending his time with his children and grand-children and many close friends, snow machining, hunting, fishing and at his cherished MCR property at the Blackfoot Reservoir.
And every Thursday evening in the summer months he enjoyed taking tickets at the drive-in theater, which enabled him to keep in contact with many of his young and older friends.
Wayne is survived by his wife Debbie, daughter Amy Dye, son Travis L. (Angela M.) Smith both of Pocatello. Wayne and Debbie have eleven grandchildren and one great grandchild coming in November, three sisters; Carol Hardenbrook, Joan Marshall of Pocatello, Jerry Rae (Jim) Hill of Yakima, Washington, and many nieces and nephews.
He was proceeded in death by his parents (his father died three months before Wayne was born) and one brother, Robert Smith of Australia.
Wayne was a good and gracious man, loving husband, wonderful father, grandfather and great friend. He had many great and good friends that he considered his family. We will all miss his blue eyes, huge smile, sense of humor and wit, his 'happy feet dance', bitter beer face, and singing his rendition of "Elvira" and "Amarillo by Morning" with his beautiful deep voice at our Kareoke parties. He will be forever cherished and missed.
Services will be held Monday, August 8, 2011 at the Hooper LDS church on Hooper Avenue in Soda Springs, Idaho. Family will receive family and friends at 12:30 to 1:30 and the memorial will begin at 2:00; under the direction of Sims Funeral Home.
Family suggests donations be made to "Brooklynsplayground.org" in appreciation of Wayne's example of generosity and compassion for all children.
