Obituary

William Glen Harris, 87, of Bancroft Idaho, passed away Thursday, February 13th, 2020. He was under the care of Brookdale Assisted Living and Encompass Hospice Pocatello Idaho.

Glen was born on October 2nd, 1932, in Lago, Idaho to William McGee and Sybil Lucille Letham Harris. He grew up in Lago, Idaho and attended elementary school at Thatcher, Idaho and high school in Preston, Idaho. He graduated from high school in June of 1950.

Immediately after graduation from high school he began culinary school training but then decided to enlist in the Navy May 28, 1951 to get help with schooling and the Navy placed him immediately on a ship. He served in the Navy for four years as a commissary cook and 3-inch gunner while enlisted. Soon after he enlisted, he was assigned to the USS McGinty, a newly recommissioned destroyer, and headed for Korea. The McGinty provided blockade and patrol duty in the Wonsan Harbor and conducted numerous bombardments of Communist-held positions. He told stories of his time while serving on the USS McGinty and his time in Korea and in the Pacific. He received a Korean Service Medal, U.S. Service Medal and National Defense Service Medal. After his discharge from the Navy, He worked for several different trucking companies while living in Los Angeles then moved backed home to Idaho and worked as a welder, the Forest Service, Idaho State Transportation Department working hard until he was 85 years of age. He always said that work was the only thing keeping him alive.

He also sang "West of the Tetons" a song composed by his mother, Sybil the celebration of his grandparent's Golden Wedding Anniversary in 1950. He enjoyed hunting, and fishing, singing, driving truck, and working until he couldn't. He loved the great outdoors most of all.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce Marie Senn Harris; brothers, Van Letham Harris (Gayla), Terry Mortensen (Janna), Monica Dawn Barnum (Brent), Glena Marie David (Darrell), Karla Lucile Gough, Dusty Lane Senn, (Tina), Rusty Wayne Harris (Sharla), Lynn C. Harris, Wm. (Billie) McGee Harris, Geraldine Harris; 20 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Evan McGee Harris; Byron Neal Harris; stepbrothers: Jerry Mortensen and Jim Mortensen.

The family would like to give a special thank you to Encompass Hospice of Eastern Idaho, family and friends for their love and support.

The Grave side service will be at 1:00 pm at Lago Cemetery on Thursday, February 20, 2020 (9-Miles So. of Grace on Lago Liberty Road) where military funeral honors will be performed.
