Obituary

William Brent Maughan passed away suddenly at home in Soda Springs, Idaho on January 17, 2023. He was born to William Guy Maughan and Laura Pearl Cornelison on July 25, 1939 in Logan, Utah. He was 83 years old.

Brent is preceded in death by his parents, William Guy and Laura Pearl; brothers Gerald and Rex; sister, Sue; and great-grandson, Owen Gallegos.

He is survived by his wife, Alene, of Soda Springs, ID; daughter Pam (Jim) Neuner of Kaysville, UT; son Bret (Brenda) Maughan of Beaverdam, UT; daughter Tracie (Mike) Rendon of Austin, TX; son Eric (Yvette) Maughan of St. Petersburg, FL; and son Jason (Marcie) Maughan of Honeyville, UT. Also surviving are seventeen grandchildren and twenty-seven great-grandchildren.

Brent attended North Gem High School in Bancroft, Idaho participating in student government and sports. Brent was a member of the basketball team winning the Idaho State Championship his senior year. He learned the value of hard work while farming with his dad and brothers in Ivins and north of Soda Springs. After graduating, he enlisted with the Navy. Brent received his recruitment training in San Diego and completed ET class "A" school at Treasure Island. In April 1959 he took an assignment aboard the U.S.S. Henrico with the First Fleet. He spent one year on the Henrico and then reassigned to the U.S.S. Chilton. Brent received a letter of commendation for outstanding performance and a Medal of Good Conduct during his service.

During his Naval service, Brent successfully courted a certain girl back home via handwritten, heartfelt letters. He married his sweetheart, Doris Alene Argyle on January 4, 1961. They later solemnized their union in the Idaho Falls, Idaho, Temple.

After an Honorable Discharge from the U.S. Navy, he was employed by Yost Office Systems in Pocatello, Idaho. In 1968 Brent and family moved and settled in Soda Springs where he ran Ern's Sporting Goods and was an insurance agent for Farmers Insurance Group. He obtained his real estate license in 1973, and later formed Maughan & Associates selling real estate and insurance in the Caribou County area for over fifty years.

Working closely with his brother, Rex, Brent supervised the restoration of the historic Enders Hotel and Museum in Soda Springs, a multi-year project completed in 2002. Brent was the museum Curator and General Manager for the hotel and Geyser View restaurant for nearly twenty years, an endeavor culminating in both brothers being recognized as Hometown Heroes for the City of Soda Springs.

Brent was a valued member of the National Association of Realtors @ , Ducks Unlimited, and the Soda Springs Lions Club where he received the Melvin Jones Fellow Award for a lifetime of dedicated humanitarian services. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He shared this love with his children, including them on frequent outings and instilling a genuine appreciation for wildlife, nature, and all of God's creations. Most recently, he enjoyed daily outings with his sweetheart, Alene, to find and observe the deer, wild turkeys, pheasants, and anything else they happened to come across. Together, they shared and enjoyed the beauty of the area he loved and called home for most of his life.

A viewing will be Monday evening, January 23, 2023, from 6-8 p.m. at the Sims Funeral Home, 139 East 2nd South, Soda Springs. Funeral services will be Tuesday, January 24, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Stake Center, 290 South 3rd West, Soda Springs, with a viewing from 9:30 -10:30 a.m.
